Research Interest and Projects
Research Interests
My primary research interests are in the broad area of cultural psychology where people from different cultures differ in their coping strategies and how they adjust to different cultures. I am particularly interested in those who temporarily move to different cultures and how they cope with the stress as well as people who moved around a lot, in other words, whose residential mobility is high. Moreover, I am interested in how similar and different multicultural and multiracial individuals are as well as the perception of cultural appropriation and its effect on well-being.
Residential Mobility and Pattern Perception
It is becoming increasingly common to move to another city, state and even country. Past studies have shown negative effects of moving but with the advances of technology, moving may be perceived not so negatively anymore. The experience of moving may have interesting cognitive consequences such as being faster or better at pattern perception or detecting new rules. I examine how moving history can influence people's cognition and well-being. Multicultural and Multiracial Individuals
Having multiple cultural and racial background are becoming the new norm. While multicultural and multiracial individuals have been studied from different perspectives, they have much in common. I am interested how these two groups may overlap, are similar and different from each other, and how to study these growing populations. Perception of Cultural Appropriation
As technology is bringing together all different cultures, the issue of cultural appropriation has been on the rise as well. Cultural appropriation is defined as using another culture's element that is not their own. Despite this simple definition, it has been causing intense intergroup tensions. I examine what people perceive as cultural appropriation, which factors play a role in people's perception, and its downstream consequences. |
